A Brief History of Reality Porn:

It is difficult to pinpoint exactly when Reality Porn emerged on the Internet other than sometime around 1999. Luckily it is much easier to determine the origins of reality porn. In the Adult Video industry there is a genre called "Gonzo". Gonzo simply means the cameraman and all the performers are aware they are being filmed, and there is no script. You can often hear the cameraman or director, commenting as the camera is rolling. Often the cameraman is one of the performers. The Seymore Butts and Shane's World videos of the early to late 1990s typify this genre. Currently You can catch Seymore on the ShowtimeŽ reality television series Family Business. When talked about on the Internet instead of in the Adult Video world Gonzo porn is often referred to as Point of View Porn or simply P.O.V. porn.

Reality Porn grew out of gonzo genre. Unlike gonzo, Reality porn didn't emerge in the Adult Video industry, but rather it emerged on the Internet. The main distinction between Reality Porn and Gonzo is that reality porn is simply the recording of real life sex events or public nudity as it happens. Often the people being recorded do not know they are being recorded, or they believe they are making a private video not a public video. Nowadays the typical Internet Reality Porn site has a common theme that runs through all of that site's episodes. Most but not all of the time these themes involves the exchange of sexual favors for something else of value such as money, rent, a modeling contract, a green card, home repairs and almost anything else you can think of. Often a twist is thrown in at the end of a scene, and the dupe doesn't even get what was promised. Today this type of reality porn is almost always scripted and performed by paid actors because legal requirements would make it impossible to use video footage obtained in real life situations like this.

When the first Reality Porn Sites emerged they didn't have a common theme or trick to them. In the beginning Reality Porn was as stated above the recording of real life sex events as they happen. Typically this early type of Reality Porn was created at events where spontaneous public nudity and sexual activity was likely to happen think Spring Break, Bike Week, Mardi Gras and so on, but back then these sites weren't identified as "reality sites". That terminology did not emerge until reality television took off. These early public nudity types of sites have been around forever and are still popular. The most successfully early reality porn site was Voyeur Dorm. On that site female college coeds got to live in a huge home, and got paid a salary. The only catch was that they were constantly recoded including when they took showers, changed clothes and so on. In the beginning Voyeur Dorm wasn't highly sexual. More often than not people watched for hours in hopes of catching a brief glimpse of nudity or sexual activity. Because the site allowed you to monitor the college coeds in the home 24-7 a lot of time there wasn't anything of a sexual nature going on as they just doing things that typical coeds do.

As time went on reality porn moved more towards each site having a common theme in an episodic format. The emergence, and overwhelming success of Bang Bus solidified this template as a model for success, and many modern reality sites still follow the basic formula laid out in Bang Bus. That is in a typical Bang Bus episode the guys come across a hot gal walking alongside the road. The offer her a ride, cash or something else of value hoping to coax her into performing sexual favors. Often the episode ends when the gal is kicked off the bus (really a van) once the sex is over and ends up not getting what was promised to her.

Celebrity sex tapes are also a form of reality porn. Of course the most famous celebrity sex tape is the Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee sex tape. The Next big one was Pairs Hilton's One Night in Paris. The Amy Fisher sex tape will likely be the next big celebrity sex tape once the litigation over that tape ends. Over the past few years Reality Porn has become so popular that Adult Video News had to add two new categories to its annual awards show in 2004: Best Amateur Tape and Best Amateur Series.
